Why your site needs an XML sitemap

Search engines discover pages two ways: by following links, and by reading your XML sitemap. A sitemap is the file — usually at https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml — that lists every URL you want crawled, so new pages, deep pages, and pages with few internal links get found and indexed instead of sitting invisible. It won't boost rankings by itself, but nothing gets ranked until it gets crawled.

What the three optional tags actually do

lastmod tells crawlers when a page last changed — Google uses it when it's consistently truthful, so never stamp every page with today's date on every regenerate. changefreq and priority are hints that Google mostly ignores but other crawlers still read; emit them if they're accurate, omit them if they're noise. This generator lets you do either.

How auto-priority works

With priority set to Auto, the tool assigns weight by URL depth: your homepage gets 1.0, top-level pages like /pricing get 0.8, second-level pages like /blog/post get 0.6, and anything deeper gets 0.5. That mirrors how link equity typically flows through a site and saves you hand-tuning hundreds of rows.

Protocol limits — 50,000 URLs / 50MB

The sitemaps.org protocol caps a single file at 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed. The live counters in this tool track both while you type. If you're over the line, split your URLs into multiple sitemaps (by section or date) and reference them from a sitemap index file.
