About this tool

Every password is generated locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues) β€” the same cryptographically-secure random source browsers use to generate encryption keys. Nothing is sent over the network, logged, or stored anywhere. You can disconnect from the internet and this page still works.

What is entropy?

Entropy, measured in bits, is the standard way to express how hard a password is to guess. Each additional bit doubles the number of possible combinations. Under ~50 bits is weak, 50–80 is reasonable, 80–120 is strong, and 120+ is very strong. Length contributes more entropy than added complexity, which is why a long passphrase can be both memorable and secure.

Password vs. passphrase

Random-character passwords pack maximum entropy into few characters but are hard to memorize β€” store them in a password manager. Passphrases (several random words) are far easier to recall and reach high entropy with enough words. Use a passphrase for the handful of credentials you must type from memory.
