When you drag the corner of a 500-pixel image up to 2000 pixels, your software has to invent 15 out of every 16 pixels. Classic resizing invents them by averaging neighbors — which is why the result looks soft and smeared. Upscaling amplifies everything, including JPEG compression artifacts. If you have a less-compressed version of the same image, use it. Garbage in scales up to bigger garbage.
Don't jump to 4x out of habit. If you need a 2x size bump, run 2x — every doubling gives the model more room to invent, and more invention means more risk of the plastic look. Use the smallest enlargement that solves your problem.
These are where AI upscalers slip. Zoom into faces and any text after upscaling. If a face looks waxy or text turned into gibberish, that region was guessed — re-run at a lower scale or accept that the detail simply wasn't there to recover.
What it does well: rescues small-but-good photos, restores soft scans, and beats classic resizing in every case where the subject is recognizable. What it doesn't do: read fine print that was never legible, or turn a thumbnail into a billboard-grade master. There's a ceiling on how much real information can be recovered, and past it the model is painting, not restoring.
